Why Dip-and-Dunk?

Why Dip-and-Dunk?

With the launch of our new E6 developing machine, Hillvale is now officially the only lab in Australia offering dip-and-dunk development for all three major film processes: C-41, B&W, and E6.

So what does that actually mean, and why should it matter to you?

There are countless variables that go into creating a great image: the film stock, your camera, the scanner, the person scanning and of course, how the film is developed. If a scan doesn’t come out quite right, it can usually be redone or edited in post. But if a roll is developed incorrectly, there's not much you can do to fix it.

That’s why high-quality film development is so crucial and in our opinion, dip-and-dunk machines deliver the best results.

As the name suggests, dip-and-dunk processing involves clipping your film to racks and carefully submerging it through a series of chemical baths. Unlike roller-transport machines or smaller setups like JOBOs or Paterson tanks, your film never physically contacts anything other than chemistry - minimising the risk of scratches, jams, or other processing issues.

To ensure consistency, we run control strips every morning and afternoon to monitor chemistry levels and maintain top-quality results. Our machines also automatically replenish chemicals throughout the day, so we’re not manually mixing or topping up as things run low.

An added bonus is that we are now able to develop large-format sheet film across all three film types, and pushing or pulling your film is incredibly straightforward with a simple adjustment when we load the film into the machine.
